We have been to Birdsville for the Big Red Bash three times already, but have never taken such a long route before (see previous posts).
In any case when we left the ‘Border Village Roadhouse’ we travelled all the way to Kalgoorlie. There are quite a few things to see in Kalgoorlie, but as we have a dog (Django) we couldn’t see the most of the tourist sights offered. But we came across the ‘Questa Casa’, the pink brothel. It is the home to one of the world's oldest working brothels. Questa Casa has been in operation for over 120 years and is possibly the world’s oldest working brothel. Also known as "THE PINK HOUSE", Questa Casa is the only remaining brothel from Kalgoorlie's gold rush era, built in the 1890's.
From Kalgoorlie and on our way to the ‘Great Central Road’ we stopped in ‘Menzies’ for the night. Menzies is a town in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. In the early 1900s Menzies boasted 13 hotels, three banks, post office with 26 staff and a school of 205 pupils, But the gold rush lasted for about 10 years and by 1905 most of the miners had left town. Today the population is generally less than 100.
Lake Ballard, a salt lake 51 Km from Menzies hosts an incredible cultural display. There are 51 sculptures by Antony Gormley, all resulting from laser scans of Menzies inhabitants. The sculptures are scattered over 10 Km across the lake.
This morning we travelled to Laverton, the entry to the ‘Great Central Road’ which we will enter tomorrow morning. We will post stories and photographs from this ‘less travelled’ road….”the longest short cut in the world which is 1,126 Km.
